Dilecto Filio
Erasmo Roterdamo
sacrae theologiae professori, Leo
papa decimus.

Dilecte fili salutem
et apostolicam benedictionem. Val
de nos delectarunt lucubrationes
tuae in Testamentum Novum iam
pridem aeditae, non tam quia nostro nomini
dicatae fuerant, qum quod non vulgari, sed
nova et insigni quadam eruditione praesta-
bant, omniumque doctorum calculo plurimum
laudabantur. Quas nuper te recognitas, et
pluribus additis annontationibus, locupletas il
lustratasque fuisse certiores facti, non mediocri
ter gavisi fuimus: ex prima illa aeditione: quae
absolutissima videbatur, coniecturam facien-
tes, qualis haec futura quantum ve boni sacrae
Theologiae studiosis, ac orthodoxae fidei no-
strae sit allatura. Macte igitur istius animi tui esto,
ac publicae utilitati studens, operi tam sancto,
ut in lucem exeat, sedulo invigila. Dignam qui-
dem tot laborum mercedem ab ipso Deo rela
turus : nobis vero meritam commendatio-
nem: et cunctis Christi fidelibus perpetuam lau-
dem consecuturus. Datum Romae apud san-
ctum Petrum, Sub annulo piscatoris. Die de-
cimo Septembris. M.D.XVIII. Ponti-
ficatus nostri anno septimo.

1543.NT.lat.JHi.a 1 A2r
Erasmus Rote-
rodamus Lectori
salutem dicit.

Toties iam dictum ob quorundam
calumnias mihi, et hic repetendum
optime lector, hac versione non dam
nari mihi vulgatam aeditionem, qua
nunc uritur Ecclesia Romana, sed ut illa sit e-
mendacior, magisque perspicua, quod in Grae-
corum codicibus habebatur, id me bona fi-
de redditum: qui si quando variant, ibi nos ve
terem orthodoxorum interpretationem secu-
ti sumus: tum ubi caetera paria sunt, id praetu-
limus quod cum Latinis codicibus consentiret.
Hoc in praesentia monuisse visum est satis. Qui
plura desiderat, legat apologiam, quam magno
operi praefiximus, ac facessat calumnia. Lega-
mus igitur ardentibus studiis Evangelium, sed
non tantum legamus, verumetiam vivamus.
Evangelium pacis dictum est propheta. Ca-
vendum ne nostro vitio nobis sit Evangelium
discordiae. Non est novum. Unum et idem est
Evangelium, quod ut omnibus est proditum,
ita convenit ut omnes in hoc consentiamus.
Huc igitur nos invicem cohortemur, ut simus
vere filii patris qui in coelis est, utque? domi-
nus Iesus, suos germanos disci-
pulosagnoscat, qui est be-
nedictus in secula.
Amen.
