Aenghesien dat die ongeleertheyt ende simpelheyt van veel
menschen, den text der heyligher scriftueren des ouden Testaments, seer cleyn
achten, ende als niet daer af en houden, meynende dat alsulcken scriftuere alleen
den Joden gegheven si, ende ons niet aen en gae, ende dat het oude Testament
heel uut ende te nyeute si, ende dattet alleen nyet dan voor slechte geschiedenissen ende
historien te verstaen en is. Nyet teghenstaende dat ons Cristus geheelijc daer
door bewesen ende belooft wort, Ende dat oude Testament is ons als die wendel
doecken daer Cristus in gewonden leyt, ende daer wi hem ooc in vinden sullen, also
ons Cristus oock selve betuycht, Joannis int .v. seggende. Ondersoeckt die scriftuere, want die selve
geeft getuygenisse van mi, ende Paulus gebiet Timotheum, dat hi niet en soude laten, mer daghelicx dye
scriftuere ondersoecken ende lesen. Ooc totten Romeynen int eerste. Dat Evangelium is van God inder scriftueren belooft, Ende dat Cristus na inhout der scriftueren is geboren vanden sade Davids, Ende
in die eerste Epistel totten Corinthen int .xv. seyt Paulus, dat hy is gestorven, ende opgeresen vander
doot, Desgelicx so wijset ons oock Petrus in sine Epistelen totter scriftueren. Waer door si ons alle
wijsen ende leeren, dat die scriftuere des ouden Testaments niet te verachten en is, Mer dat wi die met al-
der neersticheyt aen nemen sullen. Aengesien dattet dat nyeuwe Testament so crachtelijc bevesticht, ende
die Apostelen hebben haer predicatie daer mede moeten beschermen, als oock sinte Steven die eerste
martelaer des nyeuwen Testaments Cristum bewees, door dat oude Testament, gelijct blijct int werck
der Apostolen int .vij. Capittel, ende int .xvij. des selven scrijft die Evangelist sinte Lucas, dat die van Thessalonica daghelicx ondersochten die scriftuere, oft si alsoo inhielt als Paulus predicte, ende dat is
kenlick ende seker dat het die scriftuere des ouden Testaments was, want dat nieuwe noch nyet bescre
ven en was, ende dat nyeuwe moeste ooc door dat oude bevestighet worden, daerom en sullen alle Cristen menschen dat oude Testament van gheender minder weerden houden, dat dat nyeuwe. Ende dat nyeu
we Testament en is anders niet dan een vervullinge des ouden Testaments, ende een claer vercon
dinge, ende predicatie, hoe dat die hooge beloften des alderhoochsten, onser salichmakingen, ons nu ge
geven sijn, ende dat door Cristum, die welcke ons vander genaden ende goedertierenheyt des vaders
in menigerley sproken des ouden Testaments belooft was. Daerom salmen die heylighe scrif-
tuere, beyde des Ouden ende des nyeuwen Testaments, houden ende hebben voor dat alder
hoochste heylichdom, ende aldercostelicste fonteyne ende meesten rijcdom, die nemmer-
neer uut gheput en mach worden, op dat ghi dye Godlijcke wijsheyt vinden mo-
ghet, dye welcke God ons inder scriftueren tot veel plaetsen so slechtelic voor
leyt. Ende weet sekerlick ende vast, dat dit boeck des ouden Testaments, een
vast wetboeck is, dat welcke leert watmen doen ende laten sal. Ende dat
nyeuwe Testament een Evangelium ende ghenaden boeck is, ende
ons leert ende wijst, hoe wy die wet ende dye gheboden
Gods onderhouden, ende vervullen sullen. Ende
dit is oock die principael ende nootelicxste
sake, waerom dit boeck te lesen ende
met ootmoedigher herten
te ondersoecken is, op
dat wi God leeren
vreesen,
liefliebben, ende betrouwen
