Dye verclaringhe ende maniere,
om dit boeck te lesen.
Aenghesien dat somwijlen ghebuert door dye ongheleertheit ende onnaersticheyt der
scrijvers ende druckers, dye meer naer deynde arbeyden, om volmaecte boecken te
hebben, oft schoone, dan correcte boecken. Hier om segghen dye heylighe leeraers,
Isser yet ghedwaelt inden scrijven des ouden Testaments, datmen gaen sal aen die He
breeusche boecken, ende inden Nyeuwen Testamente aen dye Griecsche. Ende wij bevin
den oock dat dat een exemplaer aldus heeft, ende dander alsoo, Ende dat oock dye
doctoren, nae dat noch dese translatie inder heyligher kercken ontfanghen is ghe-
weest somtijts anders ende anders lesen, ende oock dye sanck der heyligher kercken, somtijts thebreeus
oft ander translatien na volcht. Hieromme, op dat een yeghelick, die in die heylighe scrift naerstich is,
ende dye begheert te weten, wat den Hebreeuschen text in heeft, ende oock nae dat ons bevolen was den
Bibel, tot profite der ghemeynder christenen menschen, om dye dwalinghe uuter herten te keeren (dye
welcke nu, God betert, seer heeft gheregneert) te corrigeren, om te doen drucken, so salmen den hebreeu
schen text, int duytsche ghestelt, in een maniere van alteracien, opten cant vinden, oftmen daer claerder
verstant uut mocht hebben, ende nyet om eenighe nyeuwe opinien, te genereren. Ende dese voorgenoem-
de alteracie en hebben wij niet gheset, naer een yeghelicx vermetentheyt, ghelijc deen seyt, Dit lesen die
Hebreen aldus, dander seyt contrarie. Maer si is ghestelt uut den boecken, die door tbevel ende costen des
alder waerdichsten vaders ende heere in Christo, broeder Franciscus Ximenes van Cisneros, in sinen le-
ven Cardinael, priester der heyliger Roomscher kercken, des titels van S. Balbine, Aertsbisschop van To
leten, ende overste bisschop van Hispanien, ende der rijcken van Castelien overste Cancellier ghedruct zijn
te Compluten, door die naersticheyt des vernuftighen Arnalts Guillemus van Brocarien, der druckers
conste meester, int jaer ons Heeren .M.D.xvij. den thiensten dage Julij, uut alsulcken exemplaren, als sa-
ligher ghedachtenisse, die alder heylichste vader in Christo Leo, die thienste van dien name, Paus van Ro
men, ende overste bisschop der heyliger kercken, naerstich om die heylige scrift puer den menschen te doen
leeren, uut dye Apostolische liberarie des stoels van Roomen oversandt, den voorghenoemden .E. vade
re ende heere den Cardinael ende Aertsbisschop, wiens wapenen beneden onder den Titel des boecx staen,
die in verscheyden talen ghedruct waren, sommige int Hebreeus met Sinte Hieronimus interpretacie,
dye vijf boecken Moysi int Hebreeus, Caldeeus, Griecx, ende Latijn, dat welcke werck meerder is, dan
onse lof dat ghespreken can. Die ander boecken in drie talen, dye sommighe in tweederhande talen, Als
dat nyeuwe Testament, ende sommighe boecken des ouden Testaments, so een yeghelijck dat sien ende
weten mach, tot wiens handen ende oghen die voorghenoemde boecken ghecomen zijn. Dit seggen wij
nootsakelick, om datmen weten soude, wat exemplaren wij in onsen arbeyt voor handen ghehadt hebben,
dat wij niet uut eenighe presumptie oft vermetentheyt yet en hebben willen bestaen, maer dat een yege-
lick mercken mach, hoe God zijn schaepkens voedende is, in die weyde der heyliger scrift, om die te spij
sen inden eewighen leven. So hebben wij nu dan om der voorscreven saecken wille, den duytschen text
na den Latijnschen sin, int middel doen drucken, ende daer bi die voorseyde alteracie hebreeusche veranderin
ghe, uuten voorseyden geapprobeerden boecken, laten setten inden text des boecx aldus * met een sterre ghe-
teekent, daer die Hebreeusche veranderinghe beghint, Ende soo verre als si duert, met een parentisi oft
maenken (so men seyt) besloten aldus ) dat welcke aldus gheteekende, suldy opten cant daer tegen over
naerder Hebreeuscher letteren waerheyt claerlijc vinden, om den sin des Latijnschen texts te beter te ver-
staen, Ende om datmen daer in niet dwalen en soude, so setten wij dese maniere, Neemt dye sterren van
voren aen tselve Capittel, daer ghi in leest, ende the. opten cant by een tellet, dat ghi dat selve moecht ra-
ken, daer die sterre op teekent, dwelcke nyet dicke van noode en is, want dat coemt ghemeynlijck recht
teghen zijn sterre op dye canten, Ende waer wat by ghedaen is vanden voorseyden, meer dan int He-
breeus staet, dat hebben wij inden text doen teekenen aldus, Gene .vi.c.* Ende was vore bewarende
in toecomende tijden) ende in meer plaetsen des ghelijcx. Ende opten cant )Ten is nyet int Hebree. Ende
waer Thebreeus meer heeft, dan dye ghemeyne Text, daer hebben wijt aldus inden text gheteekent *)
