deren der stadt van Antwerpen.
Alsoo Willem Vorsterman printer, poortere ende inghesetene der stadt van Antwer-
pen, den eerweerdighen zeer wijsen ende voorsienighen heeren Borghermeesteren
ende Schepenen der voorseyder stadt, gheremonstreert ende verthoont heeft, dat
hoe wel hi met grooten arbeyde, coste ende ernstigher diligencie heeft doen drucken
den Bible, inhoudende Doude ende Tnieuwe Testament, in nederlanscher Duyt-
scher talen, Ende tselve alsoo tsinen grooten swaren coste ende laste, uutghestelt en-
de overgesedt is gheweest, by gheleerde ende ghetrouwe oversetters ende interpre-
tatuers inder Hebreeuscher, Griecscher, ende Latijnscher talen, gheleert ende expert
zijnde, ende de selve translatien met diversche onghecorrumpeerde Biblen, nyet suspect wesende van
eenighen merckelijcken erruere, ghetrouwelic doen collationeren, oversien ende corrigeren. Desen noch
tans niet teghenstaende vanteren ende vermeten hen eenighe printers inder vooseyder stadt, den voor-
seyden Willeme, den selven Bible na te willen drucken, tzijnder verderffelijcker ende onverdraghelijc
ker schaden ende verliese. Ende alsoo oock die voorseyde Willem gheexhibeert heeft sekere brieven en-
de mandementen van octroyen ende accordantien byder K.M. ende sinen rade, den voorseyden Willem
Vorsterman verleent, vander date des sevensten daghes van Julio, Int Jaer ons Heeren duyst, vijf hon-
dert ende veerthiene, Gunnende, oorlof ende consent gevende, uut singulierder gratien, den voorseyden
Willeme, dat hi vanden daghe voorscreven soude mogen uutgeven, printen, oft doen printen, ende vercoopen
inder voorseyder stadt van Antwerpen, oft elders binnen den lande ende heerlicheden van herwaerts
overe, alle alsulcke boEcken, acten, volumen, ende nYeuwe wercken, niet te voren gheprint gheweest heb-
bende, in alsulcker talen als hem dat goet duncken soude, Ende ten eynde dat de selve Willem Vorster-
man niet en soude verliesen zijn moeyte, ende arbeyt, midtsgaders de costen ende lasten die hy behoeven soude
ende supporteren, om de voorseyde nyeuwe printinghe te doene, met deser aencleven mach, Verbiedende
allen anderen printeren, dat si binnen drie jaren daer nae, die ghelijcke substancien alleene, noch met ee-
nigher additien, inden voorseyden landen niet en printen, noch en doen oft laten printen, ghelijck tselve
breeder blijct by den tenuere ende inhoude des voorseyden mandements, ende noch eenen anderen mande-
mente, inder selver materien, vander date des derthiensten daghes van Septembri, vijfthien hondert jaer
ende veerthiene, Ooc den voorseyden wethouderen, by den voorseyden Willeme over ghegheven ende ghe-
thoont, Oversien ooc tconsent by den eerweerdighen ende hoochgheleerden heere ende doctoer inder god
heyt, heeren ende meesteren Niclaes coppijn deken van sinte Peeters kercke tot Loven, ende Cancellier des
universiteyts aldaer, daer toe ghedraghen, midtsgaders den consente van heeren Claese van Liere, Riddere
heere tot Berchem etcetera. Schoutet Thantwerpen voorseyt, ende Mercgrave slandts van Rijen daer toe ghe-
draghen, ende op al rijpelick gheledt, Soo is byden voorseyden heeren, Borghemeesteren ende Schepenen
voorseyt, den voorseyden Willeme Vorsterman ghegunt ende geaccordeert, dat hi de voorseyde Biblen
sal moghen venten ende vercoopen, ende voorts allen ende yegheliken druckeren ende printeren, poorteren oft inge-
setenen inder voorseyder stadt van Antwerpen woonende oft residerende, verboden eenighe duytsche
Biblen, in nederlantscher talen gestelt zijnde, van desen dage in drie jaren naestcomende, ende een paerlic daer
nae vervolghende gheduerende, niet te mogen printen, noch druc-
ken, in eenigher manieren, noch elders na dexemplaar des voorsey
de Willems ghedruct ende gheprint zijnde, geduerende den tijt van
drie jaeren, inder voorseyder stadt niet te mogen vorcoopen. Op de
pene ende correctie van drie hondert Carolus guldenen te verbuerne,
by den ghenen dye desen contrarieerde, so dicmale als tselve bevon
den sal worden, Te bekeerene in drien, Deen derdendeel daer af den
Heere, dander deel der stadt, ende het derdendeel den ghenen diet aen-
brengen cundigen, ende te kennen geven sal. Aldus gedaen des vridaechs
negen daghen in Novembri,vijthien hondert jaer ende .xxviij.
Die verclaringhe ende maniere, om dit boeck te lesen.
Aengesien dat somwijlen ghebuert door die ongheleertheyt ende onnaersticheyt der
scrijvers ende druckers, die meer naer deynde arbeyden, dan volmaecte boecken te
hebben, oft schoone, dan correcte boecken. Hierom segghen die heylighe leeraers,
isser yet ghedwaelt inden scriven des ouden testaments, datmen gaen sal, aen die he
breeusche boecken, ende inden nieuwen testamente aen die griecsche. Ende wi be-
vinden ooc dat dat een exemplaer, aldus heeft, ende dander alsoo, Ende dat ooc die
doctoren, na dat noch dese translatie inder heyligher kercken ontfanghen is geweest
somtijts anders ende anders lesen, ende ooc die sanc der heyliger kercken, somtijts
thebreeus oft andere translatien na volcht. Hier om, op dat een yeghelick, die in die heylighe scrift naer-
stich is, ende die begheert te weten, wat den hebreeuschen text in heeft, ende ooc na dat ons bevolen was
den bibel, tot profite der ghemeynder christenen menschen, om die dwalinghe uuter herten te keeren (dye
welcke nu, God betert, zeer heeft gheregneert) te corrigeren, om te doen drucken, so salmen den hebreeu
schen text, int duytsche ghestelt, in een maniere van alteracien, opten cant vinden, oftmen daer claerder
verstant uut mocht hebben, ende niet om eenighe nieuwe opinien, te genereren. Ende dese voorgenoem-
de alteracie en hebben wi niet ghesedt, naer een yegelics vermetentheyt, ghelijc deen seyt, Dit lesen dye
Hebreen aldus, dander seyt contrarie. Maer si is ghestelt uut den boecken die door tbevel ende costen des
alder waerdichsten vaders ende heere in Christo, broeder Franciscus Ximenez van Cisneros, in sinen le-
ven Cardinael, priester der heyligher Roomscher kercken, des titels van S. Balbine, Aertbisscop van To
leten, ende overste bisschop van Hispanien, ende der rijcken van Castilien overste Cancellier, ghedruct zijn
te Compluten, door die naersticheyt des vernuftighen Arnalts Guillems van Brocarien, der druckers
conste meester, int jaer ons Heeren .M.D.xvij. den tiensten daghe Julij, uut alsulcken exemplaren, als sa
ligher ghedachtenisse, die alder heylichste vader in Christo Leo, die tienste van dien naem, Paus van Ro-
men, ende overste bisschop der heyligher kercken, naerstich om die heylige schrift puer den menschen te doen
leeren, uut die Apostolische liberarie des stoels van Roomen oversandt, den voorghenoemden .E. vade-
re ende heere den Cardinael ende aertbisschop, wiens wapenen beneden onder den titel des boecs staen,
die in verscheyden talen ghedruct waren, sommighe int Hebreeus met sinte Jeronimus interpretacie,
die vijf boecken Moysi int Hebreeus, Caldeeus, Griecs, ende Latijn, dat welcke werck meerder is, dan
onse lof dat ghespreken can, Die ander boecken in drie talen, die sommighe in tweederhande talen, Als
dat nyeuwe Testament, ende sommighe boecken des ouden Testaments, so een yeghelick dat sien ende
weten mach, tot wiens handen ende ooghen die voorghenoemde boecken ghecomen zijn. Dit seggen wij
nootsakelic, om datmen weten soude, wat exemplaren wi in onsen arbeyt voor handen ghehadt hebben
dat wi niet uut eenighe presumptie oft vermetentheyt yet en hebben willen bestaen, maer dat een yeghe
lick mercken mach, hoe God zijn scaepkens voedende is, in die weyde der heyligher scrift, om die te spi
sen inden eewighen leven. Soo hebben wi nu dan om der voorscreven saecken wille, den duytschen text
na den Latijnschen sin, int middel doen drucken, ende daer bi die voorseyde alteracie hebreeusche veranderin
ghe, uuten voorseyden gheapprobeerden boecken, laten setten inden text des boecx aldus * met een sterre ge
teekent, daer die hebreeusche veranderinghe beghint, Ende soo verre als si duert, met een parentesi oft
maenken (soomen seyt)besloten aldus ) dat welcke aldus gheteekende, suldy opten cant daer teghen over
naer der Hebreeuscher letteren waerheyt claerlijc vinden, om den sin des Latijnschen texts te beter te ver
staen, Ende om datmen daer in niet dwalen en soude, so setten wi dese maniere, Neemt die sterren van
voren aen tselve Capittel, daer ghi in leeft, ende the. opten cant by een tellet, dat ghi dat selve moecht ra-
ken, daer die sterre op teekent, dwelcke niet dicke van noode en is, want dat coemt ghemeynlijck recht
teghen zijn sterre op dye canten, Ende waer wat by ghedaen is vanden voorseyden, meer dan int He-
breeus staet, dat hebben wi inden Text doen teekenen aldus Gene .vi.c.* Ende was vore bewarende
