Aengesien dat die ongeleertheit ende simpelheit van veel menschen,
den text der heiliger schriftueren des ouden Testaments, seer cleyn
achten, ende als niet daer af en houden, meynende dat alsulcken scrif
tuere alleen den Joden ghegeven si, ende ons niet aen en ghae, ende dat
het oude Testament heel uut ende te nieute si, ende dattet alleen niet dan
voor slechte geschiedenissen ende historien te verstaen en is, Niet te-
ghenstaende dat ons Christus geheelick daer door bewesen ende belooft wort, Ende
dat oude Testament is ons als die wendeldoecken daer Christus in ghewonden
leyt, ende daer wi hem oock in vinden sullen, also ons Christus oock selve betuycht
Joannes int .v. seggende. Ondersoect die scriftuere, want die selve geeft getuy-
genisse van mi, ende Paulus gebiet Thimotheum, dat hi niet en soude laten, maer
dagelicx die schriftuere ondersoecken ende lesen. Oock totten Romeynen int eerste.
Dat Evangelium is van God inder scriftueren belooft, Ende in die eerste totten Cho
rintheren int .xv. seyt Paulus, dat Christus na inhout der schriftueren is van Da
vids bloede gecomen, gestorven, ende op geresen vander doot, Desgelijcs so wijset
ons oock Petrus in sine epistolen totter schriftueren, Waer door si ons alle wij
sen ende leeren, dat dye schriftuere des ouden Testaments niet te verachten en is.
Maer dat wi die met alder neersticheyt aen nemen sullen. Aenghesien dattet dat
nieuwe Testament so crachtelick bevesticht, ende die Apostolen hebben haer predi
catie daer mede moeten beschermen, als oock sinte Steven dye eerste martelaer
des nyeuwen Testaments Christum bewees, door dat oude Testament, ghelijct
blijct int Werck der Apostolen, int .vij. Capittel, ende int .xvij. desselven schrijft die
Evangelist Lucas, dat dye van Thessalonica daghelics ondersochten die schrif
tuere, oft si alsoo inhielt als Paulus predicte, ende dat is kenlick, ende seker dat het
dye schriftuere des ouden Testaments was, want dat nieuwe noch nyet beschre
ven en was, ende dat nyeuwe moeste oock door dat oude bevestiget worden, daer
om sullen alle christen menschen dat oude Testament van geender minder weer
den houden, dat dat nieuwe, Ende dat nyeuwe Testament en is anders nyet dan
een vervullinge des ouden Testaments, ende een claer vercondinge, ende predicatie
hoe dat dye hooghe belooften des alderhoochsten, onser salichmakinge, ons nu
ghegeven zijn, ende dat door Christum, dye welcke ons vander ghenaden, ende goe-
dertierenheyt des vaders, in menigherley sproken des Ouden Testaments belooft
was, Daerom salmen die heylige schriftuere, beyde des Ouden ende des Nieuwen
Testaments, houden ende hebben, voor dat alderhoochste heylichdom ende alderco
stelicste fonteyne, ende meeste rijcdom, dye nimmermeer uutgeput en mach worden
op dat ghi die Godlijcke wijsheyt vinden moget, dye welcke God ons inder scrif
tueren tot veel plaetsen so slechtelick voor leyt, Ende weet sekerlijck, ende vast,
dat dit boeck des Ouden Testaments, een vast wetboeck is, dat welcke
leert watmen doen, ende laten sal. Ende dat nieuwe Testament, een Evan
gelium ende ghenaden boeck is, ende ons leert ende wijst, hoe wi die wet, ende
die gheboden Goods onderhouden ende vervullen sullen. Ende dit
is oock die principael ende nootlijcke sake, waer om dit boeck
te lesen, ende met ootmoedigher herten te ondersoecken is,
op dat wi God leeren vreesen, liefhebben, ende be-
trouwen, dat welcke ons gonne, dye Vader, die
Sone, die heylighe Gheest, Amen.
